Rare seventeenth-century medallion

This rare seventeenth-century medallion was illegally removed from a public collection in Gotha, Germany amidst the aftermath of World War Two.

It remained missing for over six decades until it was offered to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (‘MFA’) by a London dealer.  In 2011, the MFA contacted the ALR having been unable to clarify the circumstances in which the medallion left Gotha.

The ALR confirmed the public collection’s claim and with the full cooperation of the MFA and London dealer recovered the important piece.  The medallion was returned to the public collection in a small restitution ceremony in September 2011.
