We’re Hiring – Associate

About Us

The Art Loss Register is the world’s largest private database of lost and stolen art. The
ALR registers losses and works subject to third party interests, locates and recovers
stolen and looted art and cultural property, and offers a due diligence service for the art
market and others.

The Role

We are looking for a candidate to support the growing work of our recoveries team in a full-time
Associate role.

The successful applicant will join the team in reviewing artworks and cultural property as
part of the due diligence process we carry out for clients. This involves researching issues
relating to all types of claims such as theft, looting, colonialisation, and civil disputes.
They will also be trained in the active pursuit of claims, assisting claimants seeking to
recover their property. Such claimants can include insurers, private individuals,
museums, businesses, and nation states.

Alongside this our Associates also help to manage the ALR’s database, assisting clients
with the submission process and ensuring the quality of registrations.

We are looking for someone with an interest in the art market who is curious in
investigating past events where records are often imperfect. The work is fast paced,
responding to the timelines of sales in the art market, and the successful candidate will
need to be able to make evidence based decisions under time pressure from clients.

The role requires strong oral and written communication skills, and the ability to build
and develop client relationships is essential. Additional languages are helpful but not
essential in the role, with German being particularly valuable at present. Candidates
with a strong interest in IT will be looked upon favourably, but this is not an absolute
requirement. Perhaps most importantly candidates with some commercial experience
are preferred given the nature of the ALR’s business.

Note that although based in the ALR’s London office some travel will be required from
time to time, including internationally, for example to assist in the ALR’s work with art
fairs.

Essential Candidate Requirements

  • The ability to research a wide range of issues and objects, analyse the
information gained, and present concise and coherent arguments under time
    pressure.
  • The ability to take decisions based on imperfect facts in a commercial context.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Eagerness to build new relationships with clients and third parties.
  • Ability to handle conflicting priorities, with excellent prioritisation and
    organisation skills.
  • The applicant’s right to work in the UK or their gaining permission to work in the
    UK.

Working for the ALR

  • Salary, full-time: £27,000, reviewed annually.
  • 21 days of annual leave increasing to 25 days following one year of employment,
    plus bank holidays.
  • Blackfriars based office close to St Paul’s Cathedral.
  • Private Health Insurance with Vitality, including Optical, Dental and Hearing
    cover.
  • Private Pension held with Royal London.
  • Cycle to Work Scheme with the Green Commute Initiative.
  • Season Ticket Loan available.
  • Friendly office with a growing team.
